Bioinformatics repositories: the NCBI and other tools

Readings due before class on Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Required

• The NCBI Handbook Please read short chapter on Genome (page 89-94).

• Also please read the definition of GenBank (page 381). This link gives a bit more information.

• Please read The Entrez Search and Retrieval System (page 459-44). Then try it out using your favourite gene (choose an organism and gene at random otherwise).

• Finally please read the short section on the NCBI Protein database (page 385-6)

Recommended Reading

• I would recommend that you get familiar with the FASTA format for sequence data. It has been around a long time and pops up over and over again. FASTA (just section 1)
